[ARCHIVED] Winter Storm Preparedness

Storm Preparedness (1)

Winter Storm Preparedness

The Town of Wells is closely monitoring the track of the strong coastal storm beginning Tuesday evening and continuing overnight into Wednesday.  We are taking proactive measures to ensure your safety, such as staging barricades at critical locations and planning for a warming and recharge facility if necessary.  Please make note of the following information known to us at this time:

  • Period of Greatest Impact – Wednesday morning commute
  • Wind – Widespread wind gusts of 55-60mph on the coast are forecasted. This could cause power outages throughout York County.
  • Coastal Flooding - York County beaches could see waves of 13-17ft, which could cause severe beach erosion, splashover, and a peak storm surge of 2-3ft. The Wednesday mid-morning high tide will see the greatest coastal flood impacts.
  • Rain – East of the turnpike/I-95, rain is expected for the entirety of the storm.  1 to 2 inches of rain is expected with this storm, which could cause flooding when combined with melted snow.
  • Storm Preparedness – Make a plan for potential power outages, know your alternate routes in case you encounter flooded roads, and have your emergency kit ready to go. We encourage you to stay tuned to alerts and warnings through media or by downloading the free FEMA app on their smart phone, which provides targeted preparedness information, alerts and warnings for specific areas.

To Prepare for a Power Outage

  • Charge cell phones and devices now.
  • Take an inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity.
  • Plan for batteries and other alternative power sources to meet your needs, such as a portable charger or power bank.
  • Have flashlights for every household member.
  • Have enough nonperishable food and water for each household member and pets for at least 72 hours.
  • Review your family communication plan with every household member.

"We urge citizens to prepare for heavy wet snow, heavy rain, high winds and slippery driving conditions,” said MEMA Director Peter Rogers. “Power outages are a concern. If you use an alternate power source, make sure you do so safely. With the possibility of coastal and urban flooding, motorists need to be alert and never drive through flooded roadways.”
