Overview

Wells Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is an emergency ambulance service that is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has the duty and privilege to provide emergency care to our sick and injured residents and guests in the Town of Wells. Our emergency calls are answered by our 911 Wells Communications Center, and If you are not sure if an ambulance is necessary – "Don't guess call EMS: 9-1-1."

Location

We are located in the beautiful Wells Regional Medical Community Building, on 114 Sanford Road, approximately 1 mile east of the Maine Turnpike. We own and operate 3 Type III ambulances, equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment.

History & Structure

We were formed and incorporated in 1990 and our budget is partially funded by the town and supplemented from donations and generated revenues. Wells EMS is a 50C3 Non-Profit, governed by a volunteer board of directors who are appointed by the Wells Board of Selectmen.

Service Medical Director

The Board of Directors appoints a Service Medical Director, a volunteer position and hires 1 full-time director. The Service Medical Director is a practicing Emergency Room physician, who oversees that we provide the highest quality of patient care and that we adhere to established protocols.

The Director oversees the day-to-day operations of the service, whose duties include supervisory skills, personnel management, quality assurance, scheduling from a pool of 42 per diem employees, payroll, equipment inventory and maintenance, training and education, and writing policies as needed.

Professional Teamwork

The nature of our business demands teamwork. Our employees are highly skilled Emergency Medical Technicians, who are licensed by the State of Maine Emergency Medical Services. The employees license levels varies, from Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, Emergency Medical Technician – Advanced, to the highest level Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic. The emergency care rendered by our personnel may make the difference between life and death, a temporary or permanent disability, a short stay in the hospital or an extended hospitalization.
