Firearms Safety

Firearms Safety In The Home

The Wells Police Department encourages gun owners to handle and store their firearms in a safe manner. To assist you in keeping your family safe, we offer the following services and information about gun safety.

Basic Gun Safety Guidelines

  • Treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
  • Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
  • Keep the firearm unloaded when not in use.

Free Gun Locks

The Wells Police Department is proud to join Project Childsafe in offering free gun locks to the public. Gun locks can be picked up anytime by inquiring with the public safety dispatcher at police headquarters.

Brochures

Project Childsafe has also provided us with informational brochures that include tips for maintaining a safe home, safe firearm handling, and a firearms responsibility contract that can be made between parents and children.

Firearms Safety Courses

Local firearms safety courses are held at the North Berwick Road Gun Club. Contact the club for registration information by calling 207-646-3472. Courses taught by qualified instructors satisfy the state requirement for concealed weapons permits.
