The Town of Wells has historically had an economy based in tourism. While that continues to be the largest economic driver, the increasing year-round population has a demand for business services as well. With no staff dedicated to economic development, a committee will serve as a much-needed resource of expert guidance on how to best support the current and future business community of Wells.
The Select Board hereby authorizes the establishment and appointment of a nine (9) member advisory committee to WEDAC to develop a five-year strategic plan for economic development.
Select Board will appoint WEDAC members from the following categories:
1 Select Board member
1 Chamber of Commerce member
1 Non-profit sector member
1 Hospitality services member
1 Retail services member
1 Professional services member
1 Development community member
1 Water-front industry member
1 Property services member (electrical, landscaping, plumbing, etc.)
2 Business community at-large members
1 Resident member
Committee to be assisted, as needed, by: Town Manager, Town Engineer, Town CEO, and Town Attorney
Business members must have controlling interest in or be a decision maker of a business that is in the Town of Wells. The Chamber of Commerce member needs to be a member of the Wells Chamber of Commerce. The non-profit sector member needs to be the director of or on the board of a non-profit that serves the Town of Wells. Should no candidates seek membership from any of the above-mentioned sectors, the Select Board shall fill that seat with an additional at-large member. In doing so, the Board shall seek a diverse representation of business types.
The Committee is charged with developing and presenting to the Select Board a five-year strategic economic development plan. This plan should include, at a minimum, a complete S.W.O.C. analysis of the business environment in Wells, business community support goals, areas of interest to explore for attracting new business, and ideas for extending the tourism season.
