[ARCHIVED] Wells Beach Current & High Surf Alert

Beach Newsflash

A reg flag warning has been issued for Wells beaches due to dangerous surf and strong rip currents.  These extreme rip currents and rough surf conditions, caused by the offshore hurricane, have created unsafe swimming conditions along the coastline.

Although our beaches remain open, we are asking all visitors to STAY OUT OF THE WATER until conditions improve, for your safety.  Lifeguards are actively monitoring the situation, and red flags are flying at all lifeguard stands, which indicate NO SWIMMING.

Key Safety Information:

  • STAY OUT OF THE WATER - even shallow areas near shore are dangerous
  • Avoid jetties, piers, and rocky shoreline areas where waves can sweep you away
  • Keep a safe distance from the water's edge as waves can reach unexpectedly far up the beach

Follow all instructions from lifeguards and public safety officials.  We may implement additional safety measures based on changing conditions.

Responding to An Emergency: If you see someone in distress in the water, do NOT attempt a rescue yourself. Immediately call 911.

For updates on beach conditions, follow local media and the National Weather Service Gray, ME at weather.gov/gyx

We will continue to assess beach and surf conditions closely and will update our guidance if necessary.  Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to keep everyone safe.
