The 2024 Wells Ocean Rescue crew this year is a small but mighty staff of 19 members, including 2 captains, ready to hit the beaches officially on June 29th. Due to staffing shortages this year and lack of available lifeguards, despite heavy recruitment efforts, there will be some modifications to lifeguard coverage that we would like the public to be aware of.
There will be a reduced number of lifeguard stands along the beachfront, down from 10 in past years, to 7 this year. This decision was not made without considerable thought to public safety, and the arrangement utilizes every available lifeguard, many of whom are working the maximum number of days and hours, while also abiding by age work/hour restrictions.
Of the 7 stands, there will be 2 on Drakes Island and 5 on Wells Beach, which include 1 at Casino Square, 1 at the jetty, and 3 in between those stands, positioned at Public Way 13, Public Way 7, and Public Way 3. Although there will no longer be lifeguard coverage on Crescent Beach, the public may still swim there, at their own risk. “No Lifeguard on Duty” signs will be positioned on Crescent Beach to warn the public of this change, or on any stand that may not occupied by a lifeguard on that particular day. Lifeguards will continue to operate during regular times, between 9 AM and 4 PM as in past years.
The Wells Ocean Rescue team has been hard at work for the past few weeks engaged in vigorous training, and all staff members are well prepared to keep our many beachgoers safe and happy this Summer!
